FUNCTION: Senses unfolded proteins in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum via its N-terminal domain which leads to enzyme auto- activation. The active endoribonuclease domain splices HAC1 precursor mRNA to produce the mature form which then induces transcription of UPR target genes.

CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: ATP + a protein = ADP + a phosphoprotein.

ENZYME REGULATION: The kinase domain is activated by trans- autophosphorylation. Kinase activity is required for activation of the endoribonuclease domain.

SUBUNIT: Homodimer; in response to the accumulation of unfolded proteins.

MISCELLANEOUS: Present with 259 molecules/cell in log phase SD medium.
